NEVADA THEATRE: The independent film SELL ME: I AM FROM NORTH KOREA intertwines film with drama, showcasing actress Sora Baek's compelling solo stage performance, recorded in the U.S. Capitol Center. This unusual and captivating docudrama intertwines a story of social injustice and repression with film, real-life issues, and a dramaticized reading, making a powerful statement. This special one-time film presentation is being offered by CATS (Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra) in partnership with The Onyx Downtown at the Nevada Theatre. In this poignant and dynamic story, Sora Baek portrays Jisun, a courageous North Korean girl faced with an agonizing choice: on her 15th birthday, she decides to sell herself to an elderly man to procure medication for her dying mother. Her dilemma, choices and the circumstances she finds herself in, keep the film moving forward while informing viewers of the very real choices faced by Korean women everyday–not yesterday, or tomorrow—but today. Thrust into a merciless foreign land where her very existence is illegal, Jisun must navigate a landscape fraught with danger and uncertainty. Inspired by the harrowing true stories of brave female North Korean defectors, this powerful solo performance sheds light on the resilience and fortitude of those who defy oppression in pursuit of survival and hope.
