AFTER HOURS 5/9 - The Onyx Theatre’s late-night programming returns with its namesake, Martin Scorcese’s black comedy gem AFTER HOURS. Desperate to escape his mind-numbing routine, uptown Manhattan office worker Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) ventures downtown for a hookup with a mystery woman (Rosanna Arquette). So begins the wildest night of his life, as bizarre occurrences—involving underground-art punks, a distressed waitress, a crazed Mister Softee truck driver, and a bagel-and-cream-cheese paperweight—pile up with anxiety-inducing relentlessness and thwart his attempts to get home. With this Kafkaesque cult classic, Scorsese—abetted by Michael Ballhaus’s kinetic cinematography and scene-stealing supporting turns by Linda Fiorentino, Teri Garr, Catherine O’Hara, and John Heard—directed a darkly comic tale of mistaken identity, turning the desolate night world of 1980s SoHo into a bohemian wonderland of surreal menace.
American Psycho
AFTER HOURS 5/23 - Directed by Mary Harron and based on the controversial novel of the same name, AMERICAN PSYCHO is a unique blend of horror and satire and one of the most enduring cult classics of the 21st century. Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is a Wall Street yuppie, obsessed with success, status, and style, with a beautiful fiancée (Reese Witherspoon). He’s also a psychotic killer who murders and dismembers both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or purpose. AMERICAN PSYCHO offers a sharp satire to the dark side of yuppie culture and consumerism in the ‘80s, while setting forth a vision that is both terrifying and chilling.
Little Shop of Horrors
AFTER HOURS 6/6 - After Hours joins The Onyx Downtown in celebration of movie musicals with 1986’s LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS! Seymour, who works in a run-down flower shop on Skid Row, spends his time doing menial tasks and dreaming of his co-worker Audrey. Then, just after an eclipse of the sun, he discovers a strange plant. The exotic species draws customers, saves the flower shop from bankruptcy, and makes Seymour a hero in Audrey's eyes. But the plant has a rather unique appetite and it's getting interested in her, too.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
AFTER HOURS 6/20 - Edgar Wright’s lively adaption of the graphic novel series of the same name, SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD rocks onto screen June 20th as part of our After Hours program. As bass guitarist for a garage-rock band, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) has never had trouble getting a girlfriend; usually, the problem is getting rid of them. But when Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) skates into his heart, he finds she has the most troublesome baggage of all: an army of ex-boyfriends who will stop at nothing to eliminate him from her list of suitors.
